Oh my the trends are always changing and sometimes even circling back. Example the 1930s trend was very thin eyebrows. Which came back in the 90s and slightly again in the 2010s. Though there was a difference the bases was still the same.
When I was younger, in the 80s and 90s, the take over trend was all about seasons. Woman across the continent would watch day time talk shows. They would see volunteers be pulled out of the audience. To then be analyzed by a make-up artist and be told their "season." Based on their color palette, they were told they were either a winter, summer, autumn, or spring. Women would be lining up at cosmetics counters trying to get the artist to tell them what season they were. If you were designated an autumn, for example, you were told to stick to browns, reds, and oranges. Springs were limited to light colours like pinks and purples. The idea was that only these specific shades would complement your natural colouring, and you were never to deviate from them. As for my mom, she was convinced she was an autumn, but I always thought she was a summer. If we were playing by those rules. But To this day, she insists on her chocolate brown lipsticks.
But of course, this trend eventually faded. People began to realize that you could mix and match colours from different seasons. A juicy brown lipstick could indeed pair beautifully with spring-coloured eyeshadows. The rigid rules of seasonal palettes were broken, allowing for more creativity and personal expression.
Then came the early 2000s, and with it, the frosted lip trend. This was an iridescent pink colour that everyone wore. It was the must-have shade of the time, and you couldn't go anywhere without seeing it. Now, I only ever see this colour when YouTubers do videos about makeup from the past, highlighting how trends have evolved. Thank goodness for that because it was awful. I remember mine smelled like shampoo, like heavy fragranced shampoo…. It tasted like that too.
2004-2008 was the glorious “nude lip”…. Or should I say concealer lip. Girls would have these massive eyelashes with black smoky eyes and then no lip. I watched girls in my grade have a tube of concealer and a tube of chap stick. Through out the day they would reapply this mixture to their lips.
In the 2010s, contouring took the beauty world by storm. It was all about structure, enhancing cheekbones, and achieving a sculpted look that was almost divine. Contouring became a crucial step in makeup routines. It became almost a contest who could have the most contour. People buying opposite ends of the colour spectrum for concealer to create this look illusion. Eventually some people stopped looking human.
Now we are here in today. Though we have a base trend of countering. Carving out your eyes, cheeks, nose, etc (sounds great….. carving out your eyes). Other then that we are really in a era of anything goes. People love red lips, pink lips, 3D lips, brown lips. They have vibrant eyeshadow looks to right down to simple nudes. There isn’t a “you have to wear this shade or do you lips like this to be popular” situation. I kind of like this, we are finally in a generation where you can be you. You can wear lime green eyeshadow with purple liner and you'd get compliments instead of hate. Or you can wear "the no make up” make-up look.
So all that being said, there is no better time to be you. Find what works for you. Experiment with shades, colours and techniques. Discover you, and always bloom with confidence.
